Village Savings And Loans Association

Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLA) is not a new concept. It has been found and proved that this concept has been able to stimulate rural access to finance especially among women. Although the concept is not new, it is not popular among rural people, partly because rural communities do not understand the purpose of forming village savings groups or engaging in saving as a group. The concept is therefore practised by very few communities yet its benefits are highly immense especially the fact that access to finance in rural areas is not available partly because finance institutions are not willing to extend their services to rural areas and on the other hand, lack of business environment for finance institutions to make profits. This has been noted as a stumbling block for rural transformation as the rural poor cannot finance their production activities to create wealth or facilitate education for their children. Community Focus Uganda in its awake of community participation for rural transformation invested its time in this activity with long term objective of creating prosperous micro finance institutions in rural areas in collaboration with established structures, finance institutions and private sector.

Key Activities: • Conducted community mobilization and sensitization of community members to participate in VSLA activities in their communities.
• Successfully formed 5 VSLA groups comprising of 25-30 members each in Soroti and Ngora to take part in VSLA activities
• Conducted training for the 5 VSLA groups in VSLA methodologies and helped them to roll out savings.
