AGRICULTURE AND VALUE CHAIN DEVELOPMENT (BUILDING LONG TERM FOOD SECURITY AND LIVELIHOOD SYSTEMS )

The ability of the people to have food all times in the right quantities and qualities remains a century subject on food security. Apart from food availability, food security also involves people’s ability to access and utilize the available food. It is the four FSL pillars that make nutritional health to be realistic i.e. Availability, Access, Utilization and stability. In most cases however, the food security pillars of food availability, accessibility and utilization have remained interconnected along stability. This continues to define the cycle of hunger in society. Community Focus Uganda aims at addressing constraints to food security and nutritional health; agriculture being the main source for food production and household incomes in Uganda where over 80% of households are engaged, there is still dire need to scale up government efforts in addressing food gaps in the country.

Our programmes target the vulnerable groups who include the Women (mothers), men and children; farmers, displaced persons affected by either disasters or other emergency. However, our experience is built on providing long term development programmes to communities such that they can manage own grow and development.

We offer special attention to increased food production, value chain development and marketing that result to improved food access and utilization on top of building household resilience to economic issues including access to incomes. Community Focus Uganda therefore engages communities in the following areas in our agriculture development programme;

1. Vegetable production, gradually building on to include value addition and processing at micro level for household consumption and marketing and later to large scale production and marketing.
2. Promote food security infrastructure using locally available resources such as developing markets, roads network and public transport systems.
3. Promote Value chain development, Market research and linkages with business development service providers and financial institutions
4. Engage communities in Improved farming practices through agronomic training, participatory plot and garden planning for diversified food production.
5. Agriculture, Food and Nutrition security research and advocacy.
